Spending the weekend with Katie and Alex was such a meaningful experience. I had the joy of visiting The View At Bluemont to document their wedding day, but also the heartfelt moments of their rehearsal dinner and welcome drinks the evening before. Tucked into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this Virginia wedding venue offered a picturesque backdrop. But what lingered with me most was the way the couple carried their families into every part of the celebration. Keep reading to learn about how Katie and Alex wove sentiment and tradition into each moment.

A Full Circle Moment At The View At Bluemont

I’d actually known Katie and Alex before they reached out about their wedding at The View At Bluemont. In fact, I first met Katie back in college when she was in my sorority, and years ago I even photographed her and Alex’s graduation photos together. At the time, I never imagined I’d one day be capturing her wedding; however, being there for this milestone was such a full circle moment, and watching Katie and Alex together was a true joy. They love each other so much, and it felt like an honor to document a day this meaningful in their lives.

Family Traditions at Katie + Alex’s Wedding at The View At Bluemont

Katie and Alex’s weekend was full of laughter and happy tears, but what stayed with me most was how intentionally they made space for their families. Their celebration wasn’t just about the two of them, it was about honoring the generations that came before and the ones that stood beside them now.

Family Heirlooms

One of the details Katie and Alex were most excited about during their weekend at The View At Bluemont was the opportunity to incorporate treasured family heirlooms into their wedding. At the rehearsal dinner, Katie wore the same dress her mom and grandmother had worn before her, carefully altered to fit her style and the times. The dress itself was beautiful, but knowing its history made it all the more sentimental. They also incorporated her grandfather’s vintage Ford Thunderbird into both the rehearsal and wedding day. The car was a striking statement piece that guests loved gathering around to admire and photograph, but, more than that, both the car and the wedding dress were heirlooms that tied their present-day celebration to memories that stretched across generations.

Carrying Traditions Forward

One of my favorite moments of this Bluemont wedding came when Katie and Alex exited their ceremony in the Thunderbird, echoing her parents’ own wedding day when they drove away in that exact same car. Little nods like these were woven all throughout the weekend, grounding their celebration in nostalgia while also creating new memories to carry forward.

Generations Together at The View At Bluemont

Along with heirlooms and traditions, it was beautiful to see multiple generations gathered in one place to witness it all, including three of Katie’s grandparents and one of Alex’s. As a Southern California wedding photographer who has documented dozens of celebrations, I truly believe that weddings are about so much more than two people getting married; they’re also a celebration of the joining of two families. And this sentiment couldn’t have better described Katie and Alex’s wedding weekend at The View at Bluemont.

How We Brought This The View At Bluemont Wedding Together

One of Katie’s biggest priorities for her wedding was portraits of her and her husband. To ensure the day flowed smoothly, I worked closely with them ahead of time to create a timeline that honored their preferences while leaving space for them to fully enjoy the celebration.

Because they chose not to do a first look, Katie was a little nervous about portrait timing. I was able to reassure her that I only needed a short window after the ceremony and again at sunset to create portraits they’d treasure forever. Knowing this helped ease her nerves so she could relax into the day.

Advice for Grooms

Oftentimes, I notice that grooms can feel a little hesitant to share their vision for the wedding day. I just want to share a gentle reminder that it’s absolutely okay for both partners to voice what’s important to you. For Alex, it was meaningful to save the special moment of seeing his bride for the first time as she walked down the aisle, and together we adjusted the timeline to honor that priority. If there’s something you want for your day, let me know, and I’ll do everything I can to make it happen.
